Hi,

I have the original tach, I am confused on how to hook it up to the 1997 quicksilver I am guessing the wire I need it available out of the controls? Do I need to purchase a wiring harness to use it? Or Can I run a single wire out?

Here is what My tach looks like.

and here is my control

Your really going to have to know which control you have and which tach if you are going to try to hook it up like factory.

That being said, most tachs are driven off of the stator or cdi and have a switch for the number of cylinders you have. Then based on that setting can calculate rpm. Your tach has a pos and neg post. The one in the center I think is the signal post. On my motor, that hooks up to one of the rectifier posts.

I just don't know if your setup is pieced together or if it's designed to be together and do you still have it with the same motor.

Thanks! Its the original tach from a 1972 Starcraft Holiday, which originally had a mercury on it. I now have a 1997 40 HP mercury on it.

Ok. I thought that looked like a force controller. I assume that is the controller for 97?

yes, my grandfather bought this motor new in 97 from a marina, so its never been altered or changed. Factory merc controller with correct application. No modifications. I assume that the wire for the tach has to be wired out of the front controller? just dont know which one and or how its compatible with the old tach.

thanks for the help!

It may not be. If your new motor is a 2cyl (as I suspect) and your old motor was say a 6cyl and the tach has not way to change the setting, it will not read correctly.

My current motor is 4 Cylinder. Would the wiser option be to find a tach that matches my outboard?
