I have 1983 Winner 17ft, 150 V6 Blackmax, with jackplate and dolphin hydros. With GPS 55mph at 3/4 throttel trimed up at 4700 to 4800 rpm. This prop has no pitch stamped on it,it has been worked up at some point.Took it to local prop shop to have vent holes drilled in it.I do not have any hole shot at all takes it a few seconds to plan off.But once on plane will run its bass off don't know for sure, but it feels like 65 to 70mph at WOT. Drilling the vent holes helped a little on the hole shot but I need more. The fellow at the prop shop said it had been a long time scence he had seen one worked up like this.He said that he thought it was a worked 28p. with lots of rake and cup added to it.What would have came on this motor stock.Thank, Joe

There really is no "stock" prop...
what prop to use would be totally dependant on the application.

Do they build them in "Hooters" tavern? Grin.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist that. If you are unaware of that with which I speak, they have a web site and make sure the kiddo's are in bed.

Mark

I like the wings and beer, but never heard of the props. I guess if they operate an airline, they can work props as well. I imagine a prop shop with girls in tight shorts busily hammering away at stainless props, the smell of chicken wings cooking as I sip my cold beer....Wait, where am I???

OK so what would you suggest that I go to as far as pitch. If I go to merc marine web site and use the prop selector it says a 27p or 28p tempest or trophy. If the guy at the prop shop was right this is what I have with some mods done to it.I did find some numbers stamped in the prop on the side 3 93 62 dont know what they mean any ideas. Thanks, Joe

Re: HOOTER props anyone know about them?

The Merc prop selector will show about 2" more pitch than what actually works....I don't know "why" they do this, but it's VERY consistantly off by 2" or even more in some cases.
Without knowing what was done to the prop, it's a crap-shoot. The only way to correctly tell what you need would be to test a known prop, verify RPM and go from there. Try to get a "loaner" for a test run, like a Laser II in a 25 pitch, or any prop Model for that matter...we just need a known pitch and Model tested with a good tach to know where to go.

I have another question this prop has a aluminum ring on it ,around the out side and fits inside the gearcase. It's about 1/4 inch thick. Can't I take it off and vent the prop more like a Trophy prop is.Thanks, Joe

Yes, it's an exhaust seal ring...some come off, some don't.
I'd be more apt to enlarge the vent holes than remove the ring. I haven't heard mention of WOT RPM with this prop...where are you at with this one???
I also have to ask if this is a 4-blade??? If it is, I believe we are talking about a SHOOTER...it's a JohnRude prop, and, if that's what it is, they typically lack in the performance area as compared to todays much higher tech designs.

Re: HOOTER props anyone know about them?

I dont have a WOT rpm yet or a top speed at WOT.The boat does't have a speedo on it.My buddy has the GPS the only time I can get the speed is when he is with me.The only guage that works is the tack.I am trying to get the Wot rpm but last time out the motor had a fuel leak and wouldn't run at wot.Got that fixed tuesday. The prop is a 3 blade HOOTER its stamped in the side with 1/2 inch letters. You cant mistaken that. The vent holes I had drilled are only 1/4 inch.I have pics on a disk of the prop but I cant figure out how to get them in the message.Any help on how to do this? You seam to be a real good prop guy so try this with any high performance prop.Turn it with the diffuser ring down on a table.Im willing to bet the diffuser ring touches and the blades don't touch. This "brute" the blades touch first leaveing a 1/4 inch gap between the table and the diffuser ring. What do you think, lots of rake?Im almost 100% sure this is to much prop for this boat. Thanks, Joe
