My wife is actually pretty cool about big bridges.

My sister on the other hand will not visit Vegas after seeing that picture. She still remembers my taking her up the Apache Trail from Roosevelt Dam to Phoenix 10 years ago. A few miles from the one lane dirt road up the mountain she said "I'm glad we're not going up there", 15 minutes later she was ghost white looking straight down the side of the mountain. Screaming the whole time! :D

Pierutrus....How was that run? I'm going to make that run up to the dam also this weekend, either from Katherines or Cottonwood not sure depending on the mess at Katherines. I'll be staying in Laughlin so I wanted to make the run from Dam to Dam but I keep hearing awful things about Katherines on the weekends so I'm thinking of making the tow up to Cottonwood. How was the river run up to hoover? So how close were you able to get to the dam? you say they closed it off. My whole trip was based on going up to the dam like QC has on his avatar.:D

You haven't seen the dam from the river until you see it all lit up at night, pretty impressive.

I decided to make a midnight run up there a few months after 911, when driving over the dam was closed to all trucks, trailers, buses, RV's... Got up to where Pierutrus was and lit up the signs with a flashlight to see if I could go further,,, sign said "NO WAKE" so I forged ahead to the buoy line. Taking in the sights of the dam, I spied a set of headlights zooming down the access road (thinking to myself, self,,,this can't be good). Dam police officer got on the loud speaker and sternly said I had to leave (probably had high powered firearms checking me out ),,, I got the impression they were not pleased with my sight seeing trip...

Here's another pic with, "the sign", that makes you stop before going around the corner to see the dam.
It say's "Hoover Dam"
"Secure Area"
"DO NOT ENTER"

I've never put in at Katherines, but have drove by it during the week in the summer months and it's a zoo. So you can imagine what the weekends are like. As far as coming up from there to Cottonwood. If there's any wind at all, the chop/white caps in the main body of the lake will beat you to death, unless your in a heavy cruiser!
I'd make the drive and put in at Cottonwood for 2 reasons.
1) Launch not as busy. Don't get me wrong, it'll be the weekend so there might be a wait to launch/recover. But it's not that long of a wait.:D
and....
2) If there is wind, the chop is not that bad going north out of Cottonwood.
You'll have some for the first 2 or 3 miles but then the river narrows and it's not a problem all the way up to the "bridge" / "the sign".

Hey QC...You going to make that run from dam to dam? Are you putting in at Katherines? I'm going to check out Katherines, but I'm thinking I just might drive over to Cottonwood and avoid the zoo! I'll probably see you out there. Some of my friends are staying at the Harrahs also for a family party on the beach. So I'm going to try and swing that also. But I have my priorities first, " The River Run" :D I'm leaving tonight:D I'm bummed about the dam, I was really looking forward to going all the way and taking me a picture just like the one you have. Although I here the run is still really cool and nice up that way so I will still make it.

Sure looked permanent to me but then again I haven't been up there since 07.
Might be until the bridge gets completed. They wouldn't want to accidentally have something fall and take out a family boating. Fingers crossed on that is what it is.

On a side note.......
I noticed at the park entrance to Cottonwood that they are building what looks like to be a pay/check station like they have for Lake Mead.
They don't have one at Temple Bar either, but I bet that's coming next also.

Hmmmm, that wasn't there 8 years ago... The sign was there (I looked at it) but it said something different. Can't remember exactly what,,, something about the right to use deadly force... (joking)

Maybe they changed the sign because of me :D

In the old days (12-15 years ago?) you could go all the way up to the spillway tubes. Knew a guy who used to fish up in them, he said it was freaky, weird, claustrophobic as the current would push you back up in the tube.

I noticed at the park entrance to Cottonwood that they are building what looks like to be a pay/check station like they have for Lake Mead.

I wonder what % of the fees go into actual park improvements, instead of building and staffing those check stations? I haven't seen too many improvements since they started charging an entrance fee... Sure they rebuilt some roads, but they were doing that before you had to pay an entrance fee/(tax).

Re: Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge

Yeah, Katherine as I already have to tow from Havasu . . . I may venture up to Cottonwood one of those days. Leaving at Oh dark thirty from here via Havasu. I am guessing launch around 11:00 tomorrow, probably the same Saturday, but I'll finagle some way to leave her in the water to avoid the ramp scene there. I flippin' hate it there with a flippin' passion. But I have said it more than once. "I don't make every one of these decisions."

Another reason I don't like Laughlin/Katherine is it's kinda far from the Hotel to the ramp. Everywhere else we stay, much closer, if not on the water. I can never get the family rolling and that's why I probably won't be out until 11 even on Saturday.
