I am going to change the gears in my upper gear case in my 89 omc cobra. Got the gears, bearings, seal and gasket kit, and original factory service manual. I am fairly mechanicaly inclined and can follow the instructions in the manual, thats not a problem. The problem I have is: am I going to have to spend a whack of $$ to buy the so called OMC "specialy tools" for removing the bearing carrier nuts, pullers, and shimming tools and so on. or is there a secret to doing this or even some of this without these tools. Will the tools that are used for a merc work for OMC or are they special tools for only OMC.
I don't mean to sound cheap, just a little strapped for $$ and trying to get the family back onto the water again.:)
Any help would be apprieciated

Thanks in advance

nothing to be afraid of, if you have the OEM manual, the right OEM parts, the special tools, and strong desire to get your boat back on the water, you are set!

seroiusly though, if you run into a snag, ask around your local marine repair shops, eventually you are going to find somebody who can give you good advice for OMC Cobra repair

Re: hopefuly not a stupid question

Thanks for the boost of confidence, every bit helps. I was just hoping that after spending $1200 on parts that I wouldn't have to spend another $500 on tool that I will hopefuly only use once.
