Horizon 600 Windlass Problem

I have a Horizon 600 windlass that will only run in the down position. The problem seems to be a mechanical issue and not electrical. The mainshaft gear, driven by the motor, moves laterally outward from the motor in the down-driving condition, and inward on the up-driving condition. In the up-driving condition, the mainshaft gear binds so that the motor stalls and the breaker trips. Has anyone experienced this problem? If I were to replace the mainshaft gear, is it a pressed fit to the motor? I tried prying lightly but did not want to over stress the casing. Any advice is appreciated.
