I am getting ready to wire in all the new dash and electronics on the boat. The only item that I failed to buy was a horn. I am going to be under the dash working and it is 20 years old so it is also getting replaced. The question is does it have to be a "marine" horn? I can buy about any vehicle horn for 12 bucks or so however a "marine" one is about tripple in price.

Anybody have any input? Is there a reason to use the "marine" one over just any other?

An auto horn will work. A marine horn is made to withstand the marine enviroment.

I think I might go with the car horn and see how it works. Just need to determine what note to go with.

Re: Horn??????

FWIW, west Marine here had a little marine horn for 29.00

Yea I looked at them on here and is why I asked the question. I can buy a Auto horn at the local NAPA for 12 bucks, almost 1/3 the price of the marine horn. I do not have a problem spending 30 bucks but I do not like spending money just because it is for a boat and not because there is a difference that warrants the extra money. I have dealt with this problem for years building Corvette's. Chevy parts are cheap and dime a dozen however if that part is for a "Corvette" it is priced higher.

The "marine" horn is going to have a stainless steel diapraghm; good to prevent corrosion from salt. If you are freshwater only, automotive horn ought to do you.

I can't see the complexity and unreliableness of any electric horn. Nobody will hear it anyway.

I have the "rechargeable" horn(s) from all boating suppliers. iboats included. I have a cheap "freon" powered back up. All totaled-$20.00

Why drill and wire when you are legal with something you KNOW will work?

I put a horn on my boat mostly to wake up the dudes at the bait barge.

I agree!

Legality wise a simple whistle will keep you good, but for safety, a cheap canned air horn is louder than anything electric. And easily aimed!
