I have a 1979 80 merc thats been a great motor but I was thinking of up grading.My question is if I buy a late 1990-1995 90 hp merc will I be gaining much as far as hp out the prop compared to the old 80hp?

To the best of my knowledge 1979 hp was rated as bhp (brake Horse Power) and not sure but somewhere in the 80's I think outboards changed to shp (shaft horse power) so your 80hp would probably be in the neighborhood of about 72 hp (SHP) versa a 1995 90hp motor 90hp = 18hp gain..

Stickerhard. it was 79 or 80 when they changed the rating. not sure better, Google something or call Merc in Fond Du lac
with out a serial numbers you Will be chasing your tail.

My 1987 was still Crankshaft rated... I think around 1989-90 was the change.
