Hello - I recently purchased a 20 FT Pontoon boat and I'm looking for an Outboard Motor. A guy will sell me his 85HP Outboard Motor but didn't know if that was a good idea. I was talking to a few guys at work and they suggested not so much Horsepower for that little of Pontoon. I didn't think that much Horsepower would make that much difference.

This is my first boat purchase and wonder if anyone can give me some advice on what kind of motor and horsepower do I need to get the job done. I really appreciate any help you can shoot my way.

Re: Horsepower Question??

A 35 hp should be plenty, I have a freind that pulls skiers with a 50 on a pontoon--Bob

Re: Horsepower Question??

pontoons are NON - plaining hulls, so youre only gonna gos SO fast, no matter the HP.

a 20 pontoon with an 85 is WAY WAY overkill. you wont go any faster than you would with a 40hp

check out boattrader.com and search all the listings for 20ft pontoons and see what they are running
