5.0mpi. Serial 0W320710. I believe hose is part # 865394 even though doesn’t look like exactly like parts diagrams. Hose looks like the one behind pulley in picture. Rubbed through on inner edge of sea water pump pulley.

1) What can cause this? Hose didn’t appear swollen. Lower clamp is Oetiker style so I assume factory installed clamp. I don’t see anything to keep hose away from pulley. How do I assure this doesn’t happen again?

2) I see prices of $70-80 for this hose. Seems insane. Anything special about this hose? Can I use a 90 degree molded radiator hose? Any idea on diameter?

Thanks

hoses before the sea water pump should have the wire spring in them, or be made of re-inforced rubber

hoses after the sea water pump should be rated for 2 bar pressure

I would use the gates molded hose cross-refference and get a hose that is close for under $15

https://assets.gates.com/content/dam...-guide_web.pdf

should be 1-1/4" (start about page 59)

>>> What can cause this? [ Not the best design in the world . . . my engines have the recirculating hose coming very close to the sea water pump pulley  ]

>>> I don’t see anything to keep hose away from pulley. How do I assure this doesn’t happen again? [ See if you can take a large tywrap around the hose and any nearby bracket to hold the hose away from the pulley. ]

Thank you both. Both responses gave me the same response.... and it’s not a desire to give mercruiser a big hug.

unrestrained hoses also move around a bit. zip ties help keep things restrained.

Yep, I get it, you get, Ted gets it, how come mercruiser doesn’t get it? My car has a factory restraint on the radiator hose to keep it from bouncing into a pulley. Wish mercruiser had same level of concern.

I got an in-stock radiator hose from Advance Auto for $21 and cut it down. It fit MUCH better (really) and didn’t need any restraints due to increased clearance. Only concern was the hose was a 1.31” not 1.25” but I tightened the clamps good and no leaks.

I started to type out the flaws in the OEM design and how this fit better but it was turning into multiple paragraphs on the subtle curves of a hose... so I’ll spare you. Enough said that OEM design is poor and overpriced.
