Coming off the bottom of the distributor there are two hoses. These hoses are connected to L shaped plastic pieces that screw into the distributor. one of the hoses is connected to a red one and the other a black one.. they run from the distributor down to what looks like just a couple of bolts as far as I can tell... I am wondering what these hoses are for?? I pulled the one connected to the red one off and looked at it and it is full of crap..... not sure if this stuff is meant to be there or if I need to clean these out real good.... ?? any ideas of what I am talking about?

Those are vent hoses to prevent dist. explosions, they should be cleared of crap.

In removing one of the hoses I found that one of the plastic Ls were busted but not the ones at distributor.. Do I need to replace this or will it still do the job?

I wouldn't worry about them. Later model distributor caps had screens only.

Re: Hoses coming off distributor??

Sometime ago one of the pro Merc techs (can't remember who) said the hoses vented ozone from distributor. He also said the hoses become hard over the years and can stop or slow the distributor from going to full advance.
