Repowered 78 Crusiers Barnegat with a used 190. Original motor was a 470. Both motors had hard to start problem, slow cranking. Finally after many 'rebuilds' I had someone convert a tractor starter to work on the 190. With brand new batteries and this converted 'Crankenstein' starter, it cranked and started much better. I took it out for about a half hour and it did fine. Upon prepping it for the next trip, I noticed the marine connection on the marine battery had actually melted and there was the positive cable, bolted to a nut/bolt and a puddle of lead on top of the battery, and the solenoid was toast.(not closing) I replaced the solenoid and the eye connector on the end of the positive cable. Started engine and watched, ....smoke started curling off the positive terminal of the starter. Have I messed up the wiring somewhere? (new ignition switch as well) Pulling a lot of current at the starter after it has started. heard starter re engage once. killed motor by switching the battery switch off. front of solenoid has battery cable, alternator cable, and cable for main harness attached. rear terminal is attached to starter, and this cable got very hot as well. two smaller wires attach to solenoid from wiring harness. (anyone tell me color code for these wires/connections?) any clue what is messed up? thanks.

Replace the cables as well as the starter.

Yeah, the starter the Dodgeman recommend should do the trick. High torque PMGR starter is what I have on my 470.
