My father has a 140hp Chrysler outboard that is running hot and we are not sure why. Some water is coming out of the discharge, but we don't know how much we should be seeing.

Any ideas?

There should be a nice, steady flow of water that is warm to touch, not scalding. If the cylinder head is getting too hot to leave a finger on for a few seconds, it has a problem. When was the last impeller and/or thermostat change?

I am not sure on the t-stat. I know that we pulled the drive and looked at the impeller a couple of years ago and it looked good; no blades missing and it seemed flexible.

This has been an ongoing problem for a couple of years.

I did order a manual for the motor and, based on other posts, I figured the t-stat might be something worth checking out.

How does one check a thermostat to see if it is functioning properly? Put it in a pot of water on a stove with a cooking thermometer and check the temperature when it opens up?

Thanks for replying.

You're right on on the t-stat test. But as far as the impeller, I'd go ahead and replace it. Appearance can be deceiving with that particular part, and it's cheap insurance to pop in a new one. They can take a "set" and lose enough material to lower efficiency.

Good luck finding parts. If the impeller has been in the engine for "years" then it's shot and probably causing the problem. The rubber in the impeller will get a set to it. It looses it's ability for the vane to push out against the cup it spins in. This will cause it not to be able to move the full volume of water it should.

If you can get the tstats out of her don't put them back in. Just let her free flow water. It can't hurt to give that engine a good decarbon treatment also. Pick up some Seafoam from a NAPA or CarQuest. You can either spray it down the carbs till she quits then let her sit for 10-15 mins then restart. Or mix up a pt of SF with a gallon of fuel/oil mix and run it thru that way.

If the old impeller has #3085 on it, it's a very common impeller used in a lot of the larger Chryslers. I know you'll find one at www.maxrules.com. They have scads of Chrysler stuff anf service literature. Hope that fixes it!

Re: Hot Chrysler 140hp Outboard

I wondered about leaving out the t-stat. I did that on a car that was over heating on me while going up to Alaska, one of my college day summers, many years ago.

Thanks for the input. I may not be able to get at the boat until later this fall, as I am also working on a house remodeling project. But I will print out your thoughts and put them to practice later.
