HOT Fuel Pump and Noise

I recently had an intermittent fuel condition on the lake I'm still trying to track down. Right now it seems to start fine on the muffs and idle fine. I noticed my fuel pump gets extremely hot to the touch, is this normal?

I can also hear it pumping the fuel but doesn't sound like steady stream, sounds like it is regulating faster/slower. Do these pumps have variable speeds dependent on how much throttle? May sound like a stupid question, but as I mentioned, still chasing a ghost. I'm wondering if I might be getting air in the line. If I were getting air in the line, wouldn't it run a little erratic at cruising or WOT?

Thanks!

Re: HOT Fuel Pump and Noise

Noise and overheats are usually caused by air in the fuel system between the pump and the tank. Put a piece of clear hose just before the connection from the tank to the filter housing. Then run it. If you see air bubbles you have a leak. Could be anywhere between the pickup and the connection on the engine. Hoses with the wrong size clamps are a favorite cause, along with wrong type fuel line. Should be A1 line with the mini hose clamps. The standard size will flat spot on the top of the hose.

Re: HOT Fuel Pump and Noise

Hi Don,

Did you happen to see the other post I had regarding my problem on the lake? Boat started fine, idled fine for about 15 minutes, then stalled. Noticed fuel wasn't going to carb, kept trying and somehow ended up starting, then ran great at cruising and WOT for at least 30 minutes, then went to idle and it cut out. Started to get towed back in and decided to give her one more shot and she started up and ran fine again, didn't sound like it was missing or anything, got to the dock pulled back to idle and she stalled again and wouldn't restart. Got home and used a meter to test the relay pins as you had described in another post, and I wasn't getting the constant power at the pins as I was supposed to. Went straight to the battery and noticed my positive cable was loose by about two turns of the wingnut. The starter always worked fine, but I was definitely not getting fuel. I tightened the nut and have only had it on the flushing adapter, but have not been able to replicate the problem. Any ideas?
