What is concidered hot? I cannot put my hand on it for 5 seconds. When the motor starts it is cool to the touch and the volt reading is less than that of the battery reading before it heats up. (starting at 12.8 -engine started 12.28-in one minute it is up to 13.2 and climbing. In 2-5 minutes it is 13.5-14.5 and getting hot. in 3 minutes it is hot. In 5 minutes it is still hot and in the 14's. Then I shut the motor down and the voltage slowly goes down. The wiring harness is disconected to seperate the motor from the boat. I have a #2 cable from the motor to the boat and battery. I have a jumper bolt (a station that has 4 positive cables and another seperate one that has 4 negative cables bolted through a 3/16" thread witha 7/16" nut that clamps it all together)that the #2 cables are joined to that are very tight. All of the connections are tight. I put new ends on all of the connections on the motor side of the harness. All of the grounds have been cleaned shiny before mounting. The stator and rectifier are new and check out with a volt meter. The battery cables are new and clean and tightend temporarily (wing nuts)with a pair of needlenose pliers to get them way past finger tight. I have a mainenance free battery 24 series and a deepcycle 31 series that are both fully charged and were alternately used to see if the rectifier would cool down. What should I do? I am loosing my fishing season and patience with this "Johnson motor". Does 88 SPL mean it is a crap motor? I used a sierra rectifier also and it did the same thing in less time; 1 minute it was too hot to hold your hand on. I even use a set of jumper cables to create a second ground with no effect. I used a #10 wire to run a second jumper from the starter solinoid (jumper) to the power block where the rectifier and harness meet to cover that if the connection was not good. I need an expert or someone who has had this trouble before. I believe that all parts that fail have a history. I know if this is true that I am not the only one who has had problems with this compost sculpture of a motor.
thanks for your time

SkippeArch
