Hot Riser

Ford 302 188 Pre Alfa drive. New impeller last season, facing engine left riser keeps cool on idle right riser gets very warm or hot to touch when rpm is up around 2500 right riser cools down. Is this due to direction of water circulation or might there be a problem?

Good way to check: pull the risers and switch them. If the problem follows the riser it is a problem with the riser. If the problem stays on the same engine side, you have a problem upstream of the riser.<br /><br />As you stated you have a new impeller: make sure you check your risers for impeller pieces from the old impeller when you switch the risers.

Open the brass on the hot riser and push a coat hanger through it while running on muffs.Jab it around and see what comes out.Could be clogged with sediment or it is time to replace .How old are risers????Charlie

Can you expand on (open the brass) there is only a square socket plug in the side. The riser is 20yrs old, fresh water only.

He is asking you to take that plug out and fish around - try to dislodge any sediment. I find it easier to do with the riser off the boat. You can also take the exhaust hose off and try the same thing from the rear of the riser, depending on riser style. With a riser that old you are bound to be clogged with iron rot.<br /><br />That old I would take it all the way off and examine _thoroughly_ before I used it. Even if you get all the iron flakes out you may be facing (will, in my bet) some severely thin walls in that riser.

20 YEARS OLD????????!!!!!!!! The riser is begging you to replace it,thats why it is hot.Do yourself and you motor a big favor and replace it now before catastrophe.Charlie
