While running my 1987 Mercury 150hp XR2 on the muff I noticed that the water at the telltale was getting really hot. I had plenty of flow thru the telltale as well as thru the prop, but it was too hot to hold your hand in for very long. Does this sound normal or should I check the T-stats and popet? I have a manual but it dont tell much about the T-stats removal but I think I can do it with a little advise from you guys....THANKS

Might be time to change the thermostats, but the water at the telltale could be around 143 degrees, thats like real hot water out of your kitchen sink if you haven't turned down your water heater.

I think I will catch some of the water in a jar and check it with a thermometer....143 degrees is probably close to where I'm at...I wasn't sure what the temp should be at the telltale...Thanks for the info...

Thats about right because the water comes out after the 143 degere t-stats. Get styro cup and measure right as it comes out of the tell-tale.

Mine's the same way.

Well guys according to my fish cooker thermometer the water was 130 degrees at idle on the muff so I must be OK with my T-stats. Thanks for your help.....

I checked my 150 XR4 with a digital meter and the water is 138 at idle and runs great.

If you run one in salt water, change the stats every year and you won't have any problem from them. It is cheap insurance.
