Heating trouble with my 96 Evinrude 112spl. After several minutes of operation, the HOT light comes on, pee-line is super hot and I need to shut it down. From what I understand the pump and impeller are less than 1 year old and are very beefy for this model engine. Also there is water dumping from the slots in the lower unit above the prop (See picture), which I believe is a symptom of the Thermostats being stuck / not functioning properly.

Next question is...can the thermostats be accessed / replaced without removing the lower engine cover. That looks rather difficult to remove. I can get at the 3 bolts holding the Tstat cover, but not sure what I will find inside the housing and whether I can get my fingers in there to do whats needed. Are there any special tools I'll need for this replacement. any other words of wisdom.

Thanks
dean

Re: Hot Water - Thermostat Replacement

There is nothing different or special in your waterpump from the pumps that have been used on V4 crossflow engines since 1978. The water running from the top of your A/V plate is normal.

The water pump impeller should be checked by you unless you personally contracted to have it replaced.

If you go to the shop Evinrude site and click on the picture of the part diagram in the upper right corner, you can navigate to the parts catalog for your motor. Select your motor's midsection or exhaust housing for a schematic of your thermostat housing and parts: http://shop.evinrude.com/ The diagram sometimes shows one part when there are actually two.

Behind the cylinder heads, in the cooling circuit, the water deflectors sometimes cause overheating problems. If replacing the impeller and rebuilding/cleaning the thermostat system does not solve the problem, consider checking the water deflectors.

When changing or checking the thermosts, you need new gaskets. It is generally less expensive to have the kit, which contains all the necessary parts. Part 18-3673 here at iboats: http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind..._row=38&keywords=18-3673&**********=831408568
