hot water

1988 force 85 hp, mtor seems to run well pumps lots of water in the rear. the water sems pretty hot. i let it run the other day plugs didnt seem to get very warm or head. is it normal for it to be pumping hot water i hope the hot water means its doing the job f taking heat away. please advise

Hello,
I have the samething when I run the motor in a tub of water. It is common to have warm water coming from the jets in maybe around 100degreeas F. When you take it out on the lake or river the motor will have have an endless amount of cool water. No worries.

I have an 85HP Force O/B & added the "Tell-Tail" to it. The first time I had it out the "tell-tail" worked fine, but not the powerful stream of water I was expecting & it was Very hot. The first thing I thought was the impeller was warn out. I was afraid of frying the motor so I had a new one put in for $60. The mech. that did it said that it was working, but needed to be changed. I now at least have piece of mind & don't need to worry about that for awhile. The water that comes out of the tell-tail with the new impeller is still warm, but not hot. I'm not sure what temp. it should be, but I don't think Hot is good. For the $$$ why not have the impeller changed like I did. If you do it yourself the part is only around $20 & there is a "sticky" thread in the beginning of this section on how to do it yourself. Hope this helped.

so i added the tell tale today it works, i also took out the thermostat and ran the engine for a bit. the water was half the temp whenthermostat was in.
i tok the therm home and put in boiling water it did not open. ordered a new one.

can this motor be run without thermostat installed. my dad seems to think so i ran i for a couple minutes to check it out. any thoughts.

It will take longer to warm up with a continuous flow of cool water and it might not run well when it's cold. Replace the thermostat.

If you dont run a T stat your motor will build up carbon. When you get a large build up of carbon it can retain extreme amounts of heat. It can literally melt your piston.

The water coming out of the tell tale at operating temp is about 100-130* depending on your T stat.

i have ordered one i checked mine again looks like it opens probably original might as well replace regardless. i would say mine is 130, realisically if it were overheating it would buzz from the alarm correct assuming that works, lol.

I'm learning as I go here & don't know very much about O/B motors, only what I've picked up here in the last few months as things needed to be fixed/replaced on my motor. Can someone post a picture of the thermostat on their motor? Just so I know where it is. Even if it's working I want to replace it because the last owner did not beleave in preventive maint.. I don't want to be out on the water & have a problem. I'd rather replace this type of stuff with new this season so at least I know it's done. Thanks, (& yes I know I should pick up a manual on this motor). Thanks for the help....MAXX

he maxie it right behind your tell tale plug you instaled 4 straight blade screws remove it. top back of motor that tell tale plug is getting water from the thermostat housing i believe

Maxxie,

Your thermostat is located under the little rectangular box at the top of your cylinder head. There are four phillips head screws that hold the cover on.

Thanks guy's, don't mean to hijack the thread. I'll tell you what, so far any screws,nuts or bolts I've tried to take out (knock on wood), have been no problem. I use this stuff "PB Buster" it works great. I'll swap it out this weekend if the local shop has it in stock. Tanx again. MAXX

BTW: Kjay, when I added my tell tail I split the exit tube so it has dual tell tails, one on each side so no matter what way the motor is turned I can see it. I think it looks cool, I just like doing stupid sh*t like that. Pretty easy job adding a tell tail don't you think? & it's worth it as well.

Just remember to keep them clear. Small pests build nests in the tell tales and the low water pressure will not force them out. If I don't see water coming out of mine, I shoot a burst of carb cleaner in it and that usually does the trick.
