I read in a magazine you can use the hot water from the engine to make hot water for showers on a pontoon.

I figured they re-piped the pee stream on an outboard to a radiator type thing in a cooler to heat the water on a pontoon. I have a pontoon and have been thinking about camping overnight on the water and a HOT shower would be good...

Has anyone attempted this? or a better solution to making hot water on a pontoon?

Re: Hot Water

From the little **** stream that comes out of my motor there is not way that would be able to transfer enough heat. Maybe take that **** stream and fill up one of them shower bags. But if this is for camping i would just heat water on the camp fire lol.

Re: Hot Water

I suppose taking the water exiting the water jacket from the head could be possible. I would reroute it to a small tank with an immersion heater that would maintain the exiting temperature. You would also need a bypass valve once the tank is full, or just pipe it to a showerhead when the motor is running, but that is unnecessary wear and tear on the motor IMHO.

Or you can use the showers at most camp grounds, that's what I have done in the past.

I've never used one nor had hands on experience but wouldn't a shower bag warmed by the sun work?
Certainly would warm enough to be heated swimming pool temp.

You would never get enough delta T off any once-through cooling system to make it useful for anything like this. The only thing you could really do is allow the cooling water as a pre-heat for another stage. And, the more volume you run through it, the less delta T you get. It's all about BTU's.

Those shower bags work great. We had one at our pool and used it when we got out. It was pretty HOT!

A bilge pump, an old metal car heater core, and the portable grill? :D
