Hours on an engine?

I read on this forum and others where boaters say their engine has x amount of hours on it. Are they just estimating or is there a digital readout somewhere? If not digital is there some type of computer hookup to find the hours? I just purchased my boat about a year ago and was told the engine had very low hours. Runs great but curious about the hours. My engine is a 2001 Mercury 150xr6.

Mine came with an Hour Meter. If you don't have one on your boat. I would suggest you purchase one. It works off the ignition switch and is Dash mounted.
You didn't say what kind of boat your talking about though. You may not have a dash and may have to find somewhere else to mount the meter. It not only will tell you how many hours you use your engine but will also help you to determine when it is necessary to have the engine or serviced.

Sadly you won't know how many hours were already put on it before you bought it.
