Update.....upon further inspection of my electrical system on this 1990 50 hp US Marine Force....I started from the top down tonight!!
STATOR!!!...Wires coming off stator to coils rubbing against underneath flywheel!!!
Inspected wires and two are rubbed through to the copper and were wedged, rubbing into the under side of the flywheel!!!
I was curious...and boom!!! This looks like my culprit!! Does this make sense?
I will get a flywheel puller at work, and splice the wires back together with butt connectors and see what happens.
Any advise on proper and secure way to achive maximum connection? Should Battery be disconnected before doing this?
I have enough wire to do this without taking off the flywheel, but I want do this without stretching anything.

Thanks for the help fellas!! I believe I have found the bug!!!

jas....petey.... :D

Re: Houston...We Have Found The Problem!!

Congratulations. I hope that is the fix. Just dont ask if you should crimp or solder or both :D . That post is a killer in the electronics forum. The best thing would be to replace the wire completly, however if that is too costly or difficult do it the easy way and crimp or solder it. Solder might be easier if the area is hard to get to. If you do solder get some shrink tubing to cover the solder joint when you are done.

Re: Houston...We Have Found The Problem!!

Thanks for the Info,Euro...I guess I opened a can of worms about the wire connecting.
I am not to steady with the solder gun, so I will stick to the crimp.
Everybody I have talked to this evening is pretty well convinced that this is the problem. It makes sense the more you think about it. Trying to get over half throttle is a problem for the coils being deprived of needed current.
I will schedule surgery for tommarow night, after work, and Ill give Ya"ll an update!!!
Thanks for everybodys help!!!

Preparing for surgery.....do I have to disconnect the battery before I mess with stator wires?
The key switch is off, so would this keep current away from the stator?
Thanks....petey

When dealing with wires, as a general safty rule, disconnect the battery

If the wire is still intact and only the insulation is rubbed off why break the wire to splice or crimp it......just get some liquid electrical tape and cover the area and then secure the wires away from rubbing on the flywheel....

Re: Houston...We Have Found The Problem!!

I did not know they made liquid tape, sounds like an plan. The wires are not cut, but they are pretty well rubbed to the copper, one starting to fray. It almost looks like it has wore through the copper, not fraying it but wearing it down to about half of what it should be.
I would hate to take off the flywheel...big hassle, I can get to the wires, but I want to do a complete job. So taking off the flywheel would be the only way to have full access to the whole picture.
what do you think?

Thanks jas...petey

Congrats on your discovery petey!!!
When I read your posts I couldn't help but feel it had to be electrical. Hope your fix works.
By the way, hold on when you go to WOT. You're gonna have a "new" motor. LOL

Re: Houston...We Have Found The Problem!!

I would try and use a temp fix for troubleshooting. Black tape or the liquid tape. Do this first and then run the motor and see if it gets rid of your problem. If it does then consider a permanant fix. If the temp fix gets you through the season then if you guys have an off season in Texas work on the permanant fix then.

I can hardly wait to fix this, everytime I get a chance to repair, something comes up. I got as far as the cowling, and flywheel puller, got home late...dark....then mosquitos carried me into the house.
I will do a permanent fix on this, I feel this is the only way to do this. I have to make sure these wires are fixed so they wont be a problem anymore and stowed away from the flywheel.
I have everything I need except time....but tonight will be the night...i hope....
jas....petey

Re: Houston...We Have Found The Problem!!

Update.....
Crimped and heat sealed stator wires tonight, cranked engine and started with a few chokes. Engine ran rough at start and had to use neutral idle off the control to keep running. Let run for a while in the barrell and kept dropping to idle and the motor would run for alittle bit and die. Restarted with neutral idled up and ran good. May have to adjust idle up alittle so it will run without the control stick.
Also noticed while running it would jerk a bit then run...jerk....then run for a few minutes then jerk again. Sort of sounds like a miss or something. Wiring job is good and wires are clear of flywheel. Put motor in gear and ran at just a hair above idle, ran good and did jerk once or twice but then quit.
I am thinking I need new plugs just to be sure, seemed like it wanted to run!!!
Fixed the wires...that was my goal, and I will know for sure if this was my problem friday when I get out on the lake....
Any input on the jerking? Problem idleing by itself?
Thanks for the help fellas!!!
jas....petey

Re: Houston...We Have Found The Problem!!

May just need to fine tune the idle mixture screw on the carb. Best to do with warm motor on lake. Put in forward gear at as low a speed you can get it to keep running. Slowly adjust the screw clockwise in 1/8 turn increments till motor starts to race. Then go opposite direction till motor starts to stumble. Adjust screw to midpoint between settings.

It sucks when you are using a tool box instead of a tackle box on the lake. Hopefully that will soon end.

Re: Houston...We Have Found The Problem!!

Thanks Euro, I will try this. I will also purchase some new plugs also and see if that cures my miss. I will know tomarrow if this baby is going to come up to plane speed.
When it was running in gear in the barrell, it seemed like it was running different, no bogging sound like it had when the wires were frayed.
The miss is coming and going....runs then jerks and comes back up...we will see.
Thanks again.
jas....petey
