I'm going to blow everybody's mind here! LOL I plan on building a plane in the future and along with the aviation VHF radio I plan on installing a marine VHF as it will possibly be a seaplane. From 500 feet what kind of range should I expect? :D

I wonder if that's even legal, as technically a seaplane is as much a boat as a plane.

This one can be had for 45,000 including engine. It's amphibious. Takeoff distance on water: 250 feet!

I think that you find that amphibious airplanes are about 95% airplane and 5% boat. Flying is fun though so start studying and taking some flyng lessons.

Man, that is one pretty craft.

When I was in High School I worked at the local airport (Gopher). There was a man that had a Republic SeaBee based there. Like the above, the SeaBee was a high wing monoplane amphibian with a single pusher prop.

He could land on a lake, open the cockpit like a clam, stand up and fish.

I really lusted for that plane until he took me for a ride. It was dreadfully underpowered and slow for a light plane. I think it cruised at about 60mph and took about 2,000' to take off from the water.

Hope your plane has more thrust to match the great looks.

Hey, I remember those old Seabee's, thought they were so cool! Interesting to note they were underpowered, who knew? I used to like those old Navy twin engine PBY seaplanes also, remember them?

Working construction on the high risers on the East side of NY years ago, I used to watch this guy in a seaplane regularly take off, & land, in the east river. He used to live on Long Island, and commute this way.

I already have a pilot's license

check your aip. (aeronautical information publication)....the pilots rule book) i didnt find any rules against running a marine radio as well...in mine...but i havent up dated it in a while

and the range youll get at 500 feet will be lonnnnnggg....typically the higer you get with a brodcasting instrument the wider the signal.

have you got your float plane endorsement...thats a seperate licence...one step up from private pilot......

and that looks like an ultra lite pkg....in canada you dont need a licence for thoes......

heh heh need help building it.?..heh heh heh

oops

Re: How about a flying boat?

Although this is not a float plane I took this picture of a sport plane that landed on a lake near me last January. As you can see he landed on the ice stepped out chopped a hole and proceeded to go ice fishing. To take the picture just right I had to sneak down the ice near shore. While falling on my *** a couple of time while holding tightly onto my camera. Then I took several different shots, went home, photo chopped them and sent them to the local news paper. They ran the photo in there paper with my name underneath along with a short description I had added. I never got anything printed in the paper before and I was quite proud. :) They even ran it again this month as part of there highlights of 2007 edition. :) (Maybe next time I should ask for money huh lol) Anyway , I look for any excuse to tell people about my getting a photo into the paper.

As far as planes being underpowered I looked this one up on the Internet. I think it was from Mountain Engineering or something like that. Although with this prop setting it only goes 60 MPH he landed that plane then took off; from the ice!; in about 60 feet. You can go a long ways, as the crow flies, in a short time at 60 MPH if you can go across country and have no stop signs.
