1984 65 HP evinrude pushing a 1996 16.5 heavy glass boat. (bad plane times, so i was thinking a 4 blade would be nice if it didnt hurt my top end)

i am currently running a 13 3/4 x 15P ALUMINUM prop.

I found for under 50$ a Stainless steel 4 blade "shooter" 12 1/2 x 15P .. Its in damn good shape.

what kinda performance difference would you estimate i will have.. going ALUM to SS 3blade to 4blade and going 13 3/4 to 12 1/2......

or would you recommend its not worth wasting my 50$

You're changing too many variables to get an accurate prediction to how it will help/hurt performance. What it would do:

smaller diameter - less efficient, more rpms
3 to 4 blade - less efficient, more rpms
same pitch alum to ss - less flex and thinner blades, lower rpms

Overall, I'd guess that the smaller diameter and 4 blades would be more a factor than the material change. My gut feeling is better hole shot with increased WOT rpms and decreased top end. If you're below or at the minimum recommended WOT rpms, it may help out planing with minimal top end change.

Go for it. Like you said you have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Going from al to ss is night and day and I never heard of a case where you lost anything.......always gained.

Mark

What WOT rpm can you currently run now? If it's in the low 5k range, I don't think those props will help much. How is the motor setup now?

WOT rpm's
Top speed?
AV plate in relation to the keel?
Jack plate?
Trim & tilt?

Lot's of questions to ask but you can get great help here.

Buy the prop! 50 bucks, at the very worst it will get you home when you break the aluminum one. You'll get a better hole-shot, but probably decrease your top-end a bit. Post what Dave F asks for and some top-notch help will follow quickly!
