How can I add a tell tale to my 1970 4hp??!!

I bought a 1970 4hp Johnson motor cheap because it wasn't pumping. It had a blown head gasket (RTV lol) and I don't see allot of water coming out the exhaust relief. It is running at 120 degrees but I would love to add a tell tale. I have a 66 6hp on my 14 foot boat and I added a tell tale to it at the bypass on the thermostat cover and it works very good (found how to do it on this page Johnson ). I was possibly thinking drilling a small hole in the top of the cylinder and threading it to put a elbow in to hook a hose to. This motor was having cooling problems but idk now but I think is fine

Anybody??? would this mess up the cooling? I'm talking a small windshield washer fluid elbow with washer line just like I did on my 6hp. I don't know where to put it because this motor don't have a thermostat cover I can do it on

If you remove the exhaust cover you should see a spot or two on the TOP of the cylinder block where you can go through the water jacket, but not disturb the cylinder.

Remove the exhaust cover? I can see the top of the water jacket and I have a second motor with the head off so I can see where the water jacket ends. I could very easily add a thread in elbow to the top or non exhaust cover side. why/how would I put my hose barb under the exhaust cover? Thanks man!

You misunderstand. The idea of taking the cover off is to see where to drill it to fit the connector

ok lol! I had a second motor with the head off. I put one on and it works great! I will make a youtube video of both motors soon. I'll make a thread with links

Not under the cover. I had only suggested removing the cover so you could see where to drill and tap the hole for the fitting without hitting anything you should hit when you're drilling. If you have another block to use as a reference, then that would serve the same purpose. Basically the hole should be drilled somewhere on the top of the block, at or near the highest point possible. Put some sticky grease on your drill bit to prevent filings from entering the cooling passages as some are quite small and easily plugged.
