How can I check my WOT RPM's

my engine doesnt have any gauges. it is a rope start tiller controlled outboard. i have heard a lot of people talking about lugging the engine and doing damage and am wondering if i am doing it to my engine. How can i check it and what should it be? its a 98 j25recb johnson

refractory148, "lugging" your engine usualy means running your engine at very low RPM's. If your engine revs up I wouldn't worry about it. If your engine overrevs it will sound "tight". Your owners manual should tell you what the max RPM's should be.
