How can I fix this gouge in my wood dash?????

I accidentially drilled this gouge while removing the trim above it. I know...bonehead move!...I'm trying to save the dash as it is original and solid mahogany on my '59 Starcraft. How can it be fixed without resorting to covering it with veneer?

Need a larger pic. If you can find some OLD mahogany at a lumber dealer or somewhere else then then with a razor knife you can cut out a wedge wher the "error" is and then fashion a patch from the mahogany wood you find and glue it in place. With some sanding it will be almost invisible if the grain matches which with mahogan should not be to much of an issue.

The gouge is about an inch and a half long by a 1/4 inch wide....I do have some some scrap mahogany off the same boat that were the bech seats...how big do I cut the wedge?

Just use a box knife and slice a wedge out where the drill out is. Then in your scrap wood try and emulate the piece you cut out as best you can. then use gorilla glue to glue it in and then sand it flush. You'll be amazed how it will blend in. Practice on some pine and you'll see how to do it.

Are you planning to strip and refinish it? If so theres a trick Ive used on wood projects many times for shallow gouges, after stripping finish and revealing the wood, Soak the area with water to get it good and moist, after that cover the area with a damp cloth and place a clothes iron on it. Wet wood and heat will cause that area to swell. once its swollen, let it dry then sand it back down to smooth with rest of wood

Ok thanks Wood I'll try it. JD: I think its too deep for that trick but I have other, shallower flaws that I will try that trick on. thanks for the tips.
