ive got a 22 foot cuddy and ive been trying to think of ways to make throwing and retriveing the anchor easier for my girl friend because it makes me sick everytime when she drags the chain on the fiberglass when pulling the anchor in.
the only idea i had is to put a piece of rope about 10 ft long between the anchor and chain that way she will be dragging the rope over the side instead of the chain. my question is, will doing this make having the chain pointless or will the chain still pull down on the line and add weight?

just about every time we anchor its in about 4-5 feet of water and its either a sandy or muddy bottom. usely at beaches

if anybody has cared about the love of there life the same way i do and have come up with a good idea that might help please share. (by love of my life i mean my boat lol)

thanks

Dave

Put a length of double thickness tubular webbing over the chain.

the beach we go to is usely fairly crowded and there is also always side winds. as soon as i get the back anchor up i have to jump in and keep the boat straight, and away from other boats (alot of forward and reverse and spinning the wheel). i dont trust anybody doing it, and the people that might be able to handle it bring there own boats out. i only wish it was that easy.

i just want it to be known that i treat my girlfriend the utmost respect. the only time she pulls the anchor in is when we go to a beach that is close to my house, it just so happen to be the beach we go to the most, but with the situation it takes me driving the boat and holding it in position and clear of other boats while somebody else pulls up the front anchor, if it was possable for me to do it i would. thats why i want to make it easier. to me pulling up the chain then the anchor seams easir to me, however thank you for looking out for my girlfriend sorry for not being clear as to why she dose it

If it was easy for her, her name might be George.

No reason to throw the anchor out. Put the bow over the spot where you want to set it, let it go and put it in reverse. Once the boat is moving and let out half the scope, put it back in neutral, cleat off and check to make sure it is set. Retrieving should be the opposite, motor towards the anchor retrieving the line until vertical and at that point it should come straight up. If your girl has to spend a bunch of energy yanking the line, she is more likely to drag it over the side.

If you are using 3-strand nylon, you can weave a colored piece of fabric or line just short of the chain shackle as a visual cue the chain is almost up. Better yet, I taught my wife to drive so I have no one to blame but me when I drop the anchor on the deck. First couple times was a leap of faith, but she picked up pretty quick.

Here's the stuff I'm talking about. It looks like 1" rachet strap material but it's hollow like a firehose. You can get it online in almost any length. We used it in the fire service for almost everything from gear in place to rescue work. There's a camping place about an hour from my house that has it in pretty much any color imaginable. I'd lean towards black for the boat...

Anywhere that sells climbing gear would also have that, same stuff climbers use for anchor points and other things. Maybe a good sporting goods store?

Teach your girlfriend how to operate the boat (she needs to know anyway) and you pull in the anchor... you'll probably drag it on the fiberglass too.

Why not some sort of shower mat that has the suction cups on it. Put it in the spot where the chain abrasion happens. Easy to put on and take off. simple.

+1 on "no need to throw the anchor out". I see boaters putting the boat where they want it, and then bust their butts trying to throw the anchor out. Then I get a kick out of watching their anchor line drop down straight from the bow.

As for your extra piece of rope idea: it may work as long as it is longer than the chain. However, I suspect many times when you pull up the anchor, you will find the rope and the chain have twisted together.

Sea ya...

Maybe you could get yourself a piece of clear vinyl with adhesive on one side. Apply it to the deck just like a decal. My F350 has it on the body where the rocks hit from the tires and I don't have a single rock ding or scratch. I have to get up really close to even notice it on my truck. It might yellow in the direct sun though, I don't know if they make something that doesn't do that or not. You might call Tap Plastics or a vinyl sign shop and see what they have.

I like this idea, in combination with using the boat to make anchor deployment and retrieval easier. Motor over to where you want the anchor to sit on the bottom and just drop it straight down (nobody should ever 'throw' an anchor- it's dangerous). Then back off, or let wind/current action do it for you. On retrieval, you bump the motor into forward gear occasionally to take the strain off the line. Nobody should have to haul on anything.

For the record, my wife has always done 'anchor duty'.

You could try an anchor ball. I use wine when I g out fishing alone and need to pull my anchor. Google it.
