How can I tell if motor is pumping water

1974 <-? 25hp Evinrude<br />25402m<br />E0004028<br /><br />Got it from a friend. Set for 2yrs got it running. I used the muffs but not sure if in right spot. Got a drum to test it in today. How long can it run before it gets hot\ and to pick up water. Where specifically should I see water coming out. Also, i have a shop manul that goes up to 1972 will that work for my 74. this manual does not describe the problem i'm having

be on the safe side and replace impeller. blow out the pee hole with compressed air, critters like to live in the little hole. running it even for a minute with no water will destroy impeller<br />and put little pieces of rubber into the cooling system.
