How can I tell if new temp guage working?

Just installed new teleflex temp guage on 1989 Evinrude 40 hp, I know it's hooked up correctly but on the lake it does not register. Some of the forums say you should have one that starts at 60 Degrees but was unable to fine one. Mine starts at 100 and does not move from that point. It is installed in the correct place on cylinder right by the upper spark plug and I used a heat gel to compensate for the void in hole where I screwed it in. I also saw where someone posted that they run very cool. If so please let me know ...Thanks

verify it with the use of an infared thermometer..... you can buy one for about $30-50 ( highly recomended) or borrow one...also can you touch your motor???( not really a check for the actually temp readings)

many motors with good water pumps and oil mixtures, will run right at 100*.

Bob J has the right idea. Get the infared thermometer. That way you'll know exactly what's going on. You'll always use it later on. I've got two of them and use them around the house all the time.
