Having trouble still and suspect fuel pump. Is there a way to test it? I'd like to try and test it before i tear into it (fuel pump)and have to spend money replacing or rebuilding. The motor is a 1972 Mercury 500 thunderbolt 50 Hp. It's dying when I put it in gear and really hard to start unless I keep squeezing the heck out of the primer bulb.
Thanks for your reply's.

Two things can cause that. A bad check valve in the fuel pump or a bad squeeze bulb. The fuel pump is usually cheaper to rebuild than a new bulb.

The fuel pump test will take just as long to perform as a rebuild. Just rebuild it. I can do a merc/mariner in about 20 minutes including check valves. It will take you about 30 if you read all the instructions in the manual first.
