how can magneto charge?

i have a1968 18 hp evinrude. would like to install electric start but dont know how the motor would keep a battery charged. how would i run nav lights on this boat? (electrical knowledge challenged).

There is no charging system on those motors. The magneto magnets induce a charge and that charge is multiplied by the ign. coils, which release the charge when the breaker points close.

Put the electric start on, and get a good marine starting battery and recharge between uses.

Gee, Magnetos are only to generate spark. While an electric start motor is convenient, my advice is to save the money and aggrevation and pull start that motor.

Run the lights off of the battery? The battery would run normal navigation lights and start the motor for a nice 3-day camping trip without needing a re-charge....

If you really need a charging system, get one of those solar panel chargers that lays on the seat when you're not around. It'll keep a good battery topped off just fine...

The 33hp and 40hp motors of that era had an option for a 12VDC generator. It involved a belt driven system, which included a sprocket on the generator and a toothed section on the flywheel.

Your motor did not include that option, as far as I know. As has been said, a large marine battery will start your motor and run your lights for days.

Thanks guys. i didn't know if evinrude might have some sort of mod for this engine. guess i'd better load up on aspirin and keep yankin that cord.
