How common is to break a nose cone on a starter?

After a number of years and more than a few boats, I have never had an OEM stater break a nose cone. I recently replaced an OEM starter with one of "MES" permenant magnet starters and after 1 month the nose cone poped off. MES won't warranty because they said it was caused by a backfire. BS! I say. I detected no backfire. It broke on a cold start and melted the negative terminal off of a new 70.00 battery. Talked to a mecanic and he said he had one OEM starter break because of backfire but it was so violent that it blew a head gasket. Just curious what other pros have seen>

Well,.......

After Your Last thread,+ This 1,..........

1) I Think Your Problem in your other thread is Leaking Manifolds............

2) I Think your Starter Problems are Related....

The Manifolds Leaked into the cylinders,+ When you tried to start it, it Hydro-Locked, Even Briefly, would be enough to Snap a nose-cone.......

3)
It broke on a cold start and melted the negative terminal off of a new 70.00 battery.
The Starter had Nothing to do with your melted terminal.....................
The Terminal was Dirty......... Period............

When you overloaded the circuit, the Negative terminal had the Highest Resistence,........
That's where it Burnt Out........

Or,.. AtLeast,.. That's the way I See It........

Thanks Bondo! How do I check them to find which on is leaking? Each side has three ports, two in the rear and one in the front.

Just like you did on the engine block.........

Isolate each 1,... Plug the inlets/outlets,+ give it a little Air Pressure.............

Port side is leaking into the riser. At least thats where I hear the air going.

After removing the elbow it looks like the cooling jacket and the water discharge have interconnected. Though not like it's supposed to be I fail to see how this is putting water into the cylinders. Water is still entering the exaust through the lower discharge port in the elbow to discharge through the prop. ??

If it's discharging thru the Lower Ports, Like it's Supposed Too,.... The water runs down the exhaust pipe,+ out of the boat...........

If the Water is becoming Interconnected, as You put it, at Any Point Before the Normal Discharge Ports,......It runs Back into the Cylinders,+ Eventually pass the rings into the base.............

You Need New Manifolds,+ Risers/Elbows................

You can get the 1s like you have now,.. the Logs....
Or,...
With a little Creative Engineering, You could Upgrade to the Center Riser Style..............

Water appears to only be exiting the elbow through the discharge port. Manifolds seem fine. Would it be ok to just replace the port side elbow? If I do need to replace the manifolds, the center type are much cheaper.
