What are your worries about bird flu?<br />What concerns do you have over the bird flu virus spreading to the USA?<br /><br />Turkey now considered to be a part of Europe has confirmed a new human case of bird flu in one of their central provinces, bringing the total infected up to 15.<br /><br />The cases have been confirmed being of the deadly H5N1 strain, meaning the virus is now present in the east, west and north of Turkey. Two children have died so far, yet it is being reported that no human to human transfer has ever taken place.<br /><br />What are your concerns over the virus?<br /><br />Is enough being done to prevent its spread beyond Turkey?<br /><br />Are you concerned about travelling abroad?<br /><br />Or do you think the threat of a pandemic which president Bush has talked about has been overstated?

I ask my Dr. about it. his humble opinion was not this year, but he expected the transition to take place in the next couple of years, His hopes were that we would have a vaccine befour it made the human to human leap. If not it could be very very bad. So I gues my answer is I am somewhat concerned.

The Bird Flu in Turkey...........that's almost funny! But seriously, reports I heard stated none of the infections have been transmitted human to human, so the "Jump" has not yet been made. When it does it will become more of a concern.

Here is a PBS site that shows a timeline for the 1918 Spanish flu. Spanish Influenza map<br /><br />At its peak in October 1918 50 of every 1000 Americans died of the flu. That is just one month's mortality. <br /><br />If that were to happen today and the rate was half of that, say 25 per 1000, then 7,393,353 Americans would die in that month. This is using the CIA's estimate of 295,734,134 as being the current U.S. population. We still have no vaccine but I'm certain lots of research is being done.

They can't have a vaccine before human-to-human transfer. You need samples of that particular mutated virus to formulate/evolve a vaccine.<br /><br />As far as my fear to travel abroad - I have none, don't expect to travel.<br /><br />I am concerned that it could be a major health issue somewhere down the road, but today I have other immediate worries. Things that I can effect. I don't choose to worry about those things over which I have absolutely no control.

People should be warned about global devastation any time a devastation scenario can be extrapolated from an actual news report. You people just don't realize that the bird flu could claim as many lives as mad cow disease! Anybody who's not scared now will look pretty stupid if it turns out that they should have been.

I just hope that if I get it I don't give it to anybody else and I don't suffer too much before I go.

Here is the good news: You are more likely to win lottery that you are to get Mad Cow Disease. ;) <br /><br />"Statistics don't lie, but then statistics don't die either, do they?" (Bob Dylan, 1962)

Concerned, but more concerned about anthrax, or radiation exposure from the detonation of a nuke (conventional or dirty bomb, take yer pick).
