How Do I Adjust Shift Cable on 88 2.5L Mercruiser with Alpha One Drive

I just purchased a boat with this engine configuration. When the motor is shifted from forward or reverse back into neutral as the prop continues to rotate for a moment I hear a click or ping like two pieces of metal are catching each other.

I am hoping this is a shift cable adjustment that I can do myself with the right info. Can anybody direct me to the manual I need. Thanks

If you can engage all the gears -forward, neutral and reverse then adjustment is not needed. Will not fix anything.

i adjusted mine as it would clack in reverse by sliding brass barrel up in slot so it would push more and it has worked great for two seasons. there are some good instructions here some where iwill try to find them. try this linkhttp://www.mercstuff.com/shiftcable2.htm
