I took the boat off the trailer and took the rollers and bunks off. I have reinstalled the bunks and rollers and have put the boat back on the trailer.

Where does most of the weight go; on the bunks or rollers, or evenly on both?

In other words, how do you set up a trailer for a boat.

Thanks

By the way, I saw a starcraft for sale on ifish. I think its a cheiftain. I think still for sale.

Re: How do I adjust the bunks and rollers

Ideally you want about 80 to 90% of the weight on the bunks. If you have too much on the rollers they will depress in the center from the keel and eventually cut through. Because of the shape of the hull, while loading it will come in bearing all the weight on the keel rollers till the boat is almost all the way on the trailer, then the bunks will take the weight. Depending on the boat and trailer, ( the Naked Lady ) the rear roller on the trailer is set about an inch higher than the rest because transom sits right on it. Hope this helps.

I wish I had pictures of the previous owners setup of the trailer I fixed up as it was a great example of how not to do it!!! There was so much weight on the rollers that the had cracked and split open. The keel on the boat was indented about a half inch. Main reason... the PO had used only 1 foot sections of 4x4 set too low and as a result all the weight was on the rollers. Bottom line: What Glen is saying is good advice. It can really damage the hull if done carelessly!

I guess im lucky or someone did a good job on my trailer The trailer is all rollers and has been with the boat for 36 years. The boat is a 22 ft Hlday with a very big 200 Johnson O/B on it. I have thought about bunks but never attenpted it.
