If you just want to check for spark, pull a wire off and stick a screwdriver in the boot and hold it near the block.
If you want to check for a good spark, buy a cheap spark tester at harbor freight or auto zone for under $10 and you can set the gap on it and see the color/strength of the spark.
Why are you checking? If you are trying to see if one cylinder is firing or not, pull one wire off at a time when it is at a fast idle. You see the difference if there is one. And wear gloves when you do it or use a good rag.
