I need to check for spark on both cylinders and advancing timing on my '94 Suzuki DT40, but i am uncertain on how to do it. it wouldnt get any higher than 1,000 rpm at WOT in fwd gear, and checking these things was suggested by a very helpful member of this forum.
to check the timing, im assuming i would use a timing light (like for a car) and check it at idle. but for the high speed timing, the book says 5,000 rpm. i cant get that high. by the information i gathered from the member's advice and joe reeve's thread on WOT timing, i believe i test it without running the motor. is this correct? if so, do i just pull the boots off the spark plugs (both of em), hold the throttle wide open, and crank her over? whats "grounding the plugs"?
also, someone mentioned i mightve been dropping a cylinder. a couple of threads suggested doing a cylinder drop test. i know from experience (lol) that touching these plug wires gives a pretty good shock. how do i pull em while the engine's running and not get electrocuted? what am i looking for?
thank you in advance!
