How do i drop lower unit on1988 8hp Belgium Merc.

Hi i need to drop the lower unit on my 1988 8hp Belgium made Mercury to renew the impeller.I have done this on an old 1970 evinrude & had to disconect the gear shift linkage in a small gap which opened up when the lower unit dropped about an inch after i removed the 4 bolts which connected the lower unit to the exhaust housing.Is this procedure the same or is there something else i should be looking for? All help will be appreciated...

I think you should look under the carb.There is a junction where the shift shaft connects.Un do this and it should drop out.J
