We're talking a wood hull right?

Flipping it takes a case of beer and 8 buddies....depending on it size and weight.

Welcome to iBoats!

We're gunna need a bit more info!!!! What kind of boat is this. It appears to be a Wooden Hull. Correct? How big is she? How Old is she? Who Made her? Your pics are Very Blurry. Gunna need to clear em up so we can tell what's going on. Epoxy IS the resin of Choice for woodies. What part of the country are you located in? It will help us to guide you to good resources for materials. We're here to help so just keep postin and askin and we'll keep answerin.

Welcome to iboats. By chch I presume you mean Christchurch in New Zealand? You have to remember this is an American based site so not to many people would know where chch is! As far as the cracks go, these can be repaired fairly easily. Best option in my opinion is to flip her, strip her, dry her, sheath her, paint her. Lots of labour but then you have a boat that will last another 40 - 50 years. Or you could go the easy route and clean out the cracks, fill with epoxy peanut butter and paint her up and use for a while untill the next cracks appear and do it all again. I've been there and done it both ways so I'd say do it right the 1st time.

By sheath I'm talking about stripping her down to bare wood, repairing/replacing any broken/rotten out pieces and the cover her with a layer of fibreglass cloth, layed up with epoxy resin. 1 layer of cloth is enough as you are only waterproofing/sealing her and providing a solid base for your finishing paint. Then you tip and roll on a further 5 to 6 coats of epoxy resin, very thinly, followed by lots of sanding and fairing to get her smooth, prime with good epoxy 2 pack and paint with a good 2pack polyurethane. Here in NZ check out the Altex paint website. They make excellent products but stay away from the marine paint. Their paint techie at the factory told me to go for the industrial coatings which is the same product but at 33% of the cost because it does not say marine paint on the can.

My project is a 1955 double diagonal Kauri planked hull. I'm now doing the last of the sanding and will be painting in the next few weeks.

Good luck and have fun as it is a big job.
