Are you saying that the crankshaft taper is badly damaged? If so, its most likely time to rebuild the motor with a replacement crankshaft, or time to find another, serviceable powerhead. One thing that you should check, though, is if the damage that you are looking at is a sheared key in the taper. Usually, shearing the key is the first thing that a loose flywheel will do. If it is just the key, you might not have a huge problem.

BTW, if the crankshaft nut vibrated off, I would say that it wasn't properly torqued the last time the flywheel was pulled. Either that or someone crossthreaded it when reinstalling the nut and stripped the threads. In either case, if it was a professional mechanic that did the work, I might be havin' some words with him over this!

One final thought - just be glad that the flywheel didn't punch right through the engine cover and hit someone!

Just a suggestion before you launch on a mission to rebuild this motor - take a photo of the damaged crankshaft taper and of the iside of the flywheel. Post both here and let us take a look to see just what you are dealing with.

No, there is no quick, cheap fix. Probably the least cost course of action would be to find a good, used motor or a 50 HP powerhead to replace the powerhead you've got. A used crankshaft also might be a possibility ... if so, get a shop manual (OEM only). Dhadley on this board might be able to suggest a source. Also try www.twincityoutboard.com and www.americanoutboard.com for used parts. A new crank is more than your motor is worth.

Re: how do i fix this

well funny thing my dad just worked the whole thing over with j+b weld if it would have been up to me i would have posted some picts but he already had it gobbed with j+b weld the reason he done that he was the local hardware store and saw that the j+b weld package said broken bolts and outboard motors and my sisters camera is in her car and she is at work sorry basicly what happened was it sheared the little key you told me about and when we took it off the shaft seemed fine dad put a new key in it an reinstalled the flywheel and when he went to tightn it down the bolt rounded off so he is as tight as bark on a log and wont fork out any cash so he tries to get out the cheapest way if it works it was a cheap fix but if it dont we are gonna buy a new motor we are lookin for one at the moment we even looked at one last night it was 1963 merc 100 it was a little big for our boat

I would get someone you don't like much to test it out ... the flywheel, if it comes off at speed. can be a real killer!

i know thats what i told my dad but he said "itl work" so to be sure that it will work we are gonna put it in a tank and run it at different speeds and it has a cover for the pull start that should keep it in place

Sorry that happened to you. JB Weld will not fix this, I guarantee, and the next time the flywheel flies off, it might just kill someone. Think of a 10 lb. frisbee.

I'm sorry you're out of money for this project. You may have to wait a while before you can fix this properly. It happens.

I don't know how to say this any other way - it isn't the johnnyrudes that you are having problems with, it is your lack of understanding of how an outboard motor works. If you bought an OMC motor that was abused or simply in need of long overdue maintenance, you will do the same with any other brand and you will have the same problems.

I have a pair of 50 year old Evinrude Big Twins and they are still perfectly serviceable motors. I also own a 36 year old Johnson and a 39 year old Johnson (main engine & kicker), which are on my boat now, and they are very dependable.

As for the JB Weld, its a handy product for a limited range of things. Fixing a crankshaft or a flywheel is not one of them. Do yourself a favor and put the stuff away before you hurt someone.

Sorry if this sounds strong but, you need to hear it as it is - trying to fix the components that you speak of with an epoxy product is both irresponsible and dangerous.

^^^ very well said.

If you've ever seen a flywheel cut loose and break away . . . well . . . you'd never consider JB weld.

Saw it happen once and it was positively horrifying - punched right through the metal cowling and took out a big chunk of hull. Fortunately nobody's head was in its path.
