how do I get at the carb float bowl?

When putting my 25hp merc in my truck recently, I put the prop end into the truck first with the head on the garage floor so the engine was inclined at a 45 degree angle, head side down. After taking it out of the truck later and getting it back upright, I noticed there was an inch or so of water in the transparent fuel filter bowl which I had not noticed before. I assume it ran out of the carb float bowl and into the filter bowl when I had the motor upside down. So now I'm worried there may be more water inside the carb float bowl.

Turning an engine upside down is a hard way to get water out of a float bowl so my question is, how do I get at the carb float bowl to drain it? It looks like there is a lot of stuff to remove.

should be 4 screws on the bottom of the carb to drop the bowl.

Is this a two stroke 25ml, with the primer system set on the side of the carb ? We get different models over here from those on the US market. But if it's a standard 25ml you unclip the priming knob at the front and slide up the metal retainer holding this in place. Then remove the screw holding this into iys channel on the body of the carb. You can now remove the plastic baffle plate from the front of the carb and get into to remove the two nuts holding it to the reed block manifold. If you've had water in the system you'd be wise to strip the fuel pump section and blow the whole system form fuel connector onwards out with compressed air. I don't really feel that water would run that easily rom the float bowl back into the filter myself but stranger things have happend!!

Hello Workshopmonkey-

First, let me thank you for your instructions. I did as you suggested. Getting the carb out went fairly well. The only additional thing I had to do was remove the starter motor to get at one of the nuts holding the carb.

I have had a slight problem though. After I removed the nut at the bottom of the float bowl, the bowl slipped out of my hand and fell on the floor along with the float and needle. Nothing got damaged but the problem I'm facing now is trying to figure out which side of the float is up. The float is not symmetrical. That is, the top is slightly different from the bottom and I have no idea which is which. One surface is flush right across, the other is indented an eighth inch or so. Do you have any ideas which way it goes?

I appreciate your help Workshopmonkey. I notice you are from Skye. A wonderful place I have heard, would like to visit it some day.
