How do I get rid of steering slop?

I have a '99 Chaparral Sunesta 232 with a 5.0 Merc with Alpha outdrive. I would like to get rid of 2 to 3 inches of steering slop at the helm. Is there any adjustment at the back of the helm to minimize slop? There is a large panel in the head that has to be removed before I can see the controls.

I would tighten the two bolts on top of the gimbal ring to 25 # for starters, and see what that does for ya....JK
