how do I install a new check valve on VP DP-C1 outdrive

I just received my new parts in the mail and found that the rubber flapper that goes on the back of the outboard (above the props) is one straight flat piece of rubber. I rememebr it being molded at 90 degrees to fit snug into the exhaust ports...do i have to melt (heat) that flapper up???

You shouldn't have to heat anything.
Do you have pictures of the drive showing where the flappers go? Also a picture of your flappers? Sounds like you may have the wrong kind of flappers.
