I've been advised to install a water pressure guage. After looking at my motor setup and wanting to raise the motor 1-2", this is a must.

Motor: Evinrude 1979 85hp V4
Model: 85999R

How do I go about installing a water pressure guage?
Is it difficult?

Any pics or schematics would be awesome.

The 1979 V4 motor has a tell-tale outlet coming from the lower right hand corner of the exhaust cover. Initially, the hose ran from there to the lower cowl.

You should attach a longer hose and route it to the top of the motor and back to the lower cowl, to keep air out of the cooling circuit.

About three or four inches from the exhaust cover outlet, insert the "T" that comes with the water pressure gauge kit and attach the plastic hose.

Route the plastic hose to the top of the engine and then down and out with the harness.

BTW, 30 PSI Gauge is more than adequate.

OMC made a water pressure gauge as a kit, I got mine off EBAY, came with fitting instructions and all parts. see if you can get one of those.

Thanks guys. That's a tremedous help!:D

Ok, what is the normal pressure range? What's critical vs. optimum?

It varies with RPM, but I would expect between > 8 PSI at idle, and < 25 PSI at full throttle range

I took the cover off that's just below the head of the motor and above the upper exhaust vents. I didn't find any hose and I can't find one above either.

Here's a pic of the block.

OH! The pee-stream hose! Duhh........

Why did I make it so complicated. All I have to do is tap in the t-adapter and connect the hose and a wire up the guage. Heck, that wouldn't take but 30mins tops. :D

Water pressure guage is about to be purchased! Thanks ezeke!

when installing a WP gauge one should also replace the impeller. Then note the idle and wide open throttle WP readings. Deviation from these numbers over time provides an indication that the impeller needs service. Unless you do that you have no idea what NORMAL WP is for your engine. Yes -- the spec says xx but every engine will read a little different and gauges are different.

The impellar was replaced a few weeks ago during a tune-up. I haven't run the boat more than 2 miles since so that shouldn't be a problem.
