1971 6hp evinrude- it starts if I spray a mix directly into the carb. My tank seems fine so I am guessing I need a new pump- is there anyway to make sure its the pump before I shell out for one?

Does the motor run if you keep pumping the bulb on the fuel line? Is your vent open?

just checked the vent and its cracked in half- perhaps the culprit- I hope- Is the vent supposed to be open or closed while its running?

You say it starts if you spray mix in it. Is that saying it won't start without nursing it? If I am reading you right, you have a plugged up carburetor, not a fuel pump problem. The fuel pump only operates once the motor is started and running. It should run a minute or so on just the gas in the carburetor, even if you didn't even have a fuel pump.

with the fuel tank unhooked from the engine it starts up with a spritz of fuel into the carb. If I plug in the gas and pump up the pressure the motor will not start- it makes a gargling sound when I pull the starter

An easy (but imperfect) check for the fuel pump. If you undo the fuel line that exits the pump and goes to the carb, run it into a tin can. Pull the motor over. If it gives you a steady pulse of fuel with each rotation, it's pumping.

I agree with FR - probably a gummed up carb.
