HOW DO I REMOVE BOTTOM PAINT?

I am looking to buy a 17 FT. boat that has old bottom paint on it. Is is posible to remove this paint? I will be keeping the boat on the trailer and would have no need for it and it does not look very pretty!

some guys here say to power wash it off than sand .. try that before you sand go to a marine center.. ask what they have in the way of a chemical remover..

Waterrazor,<br /><br />I've got bad news. If the bottom coat was applied correctly, the hull was sanded to make the bottom paint adhere better. There went your shiny gel coat. Chemicals strong enough to work on the paint will surely etch the gell coat.<br /><br />If it were mine, I would repaint the bottom with a good marine paint. It doesn't have to be specifically for bottoms, since the boat will sit on a trailer.

Some bottom paints have a primer put on rather than sanding. If thats the case there are companies that will travel to you and sand blast the bottom. They do an excellent job. If you are not happy with the way it looks.You can then put a new coat of bottom paint on in a light color

2150 i got one those Karcher you used,not bad for price <on sale> along with sandblaster about 3/4 done on 208 grady with 20 yrs paint Fun city!!!!!!!

chumbucket - Just look at the gratification you get,after doing such a dirty job.<br />When you finish the boat you can do the deck,sidewalk,siding, you get on a roll and can't stop.

Some of it has already fallen off and some if flaking off, however most of it seems to be on there! I can see that where it fell off there does not apear to be any damage to the gelcoat!
