I just purchased a '83 Johnson 90HP V4 outboard. I need to repair a crack in my lower unit. I removed all the bolts and the unit did come lose, but it will not come off. Something is holding it from the inside. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Look under the lower carb.. Shift linkage must be removed to drop the lower.

Is this the same for all Johnson Outboard. I am working on a 50 Hp?

sid - yes, shift linkage holds the L/U on...but disconnect procedure isn't the same on all johnsons...
You can view the schematic of your motor at http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E follow the links to your year/hp/model no., might help, but you really should have a shop manual. Seloc or clymers is ok...OEM is better.

Put a couple of the bolts back in part way so it won't drop on your toes.

Unless you have universal joints in your fingers, save some time by removing the lower cowling. Actually it doesn't even need to be removed. Just remove the bolts and pull it aside a little. The shift rod is just below the bottom carb.

The lower cowling doesn't come apart on an 83 model.
