How do I remove "oil retainers" as I install new seal kit to 33 hp gear case?

I am doing a re-build of a 1967 Johnson 33 hp. At this stage I want to reassemble the gear case, including the Sierra 18-2686 seal kit. Included are two new oil retainers, one around the driveshaft just below the water pump, and the other at the aft end of the propeller shaft. How do I remove the existing retainers? These are the metal/rubber combo pieces that will be pounded into place once existing pieces are removed. (I was able to pound out the bushing around the shift lever for o-ring and gasket replacement)
Just to check, my next steps would be to reassemble the gearcase, utilizing VersaChem Prime Seal Type 3 Aviation Gasket Sealant around the spaghetti gasket and between the lower an dupper units of the gearcase, and then do pressure and vacuum checks before adding gearcase lubricant.
Obviously, I am adding a new water pump impeller at this stage since I am in the neignborhood.
Am I missing anything here?
Thanks for any insights here.
