How do I remove the bushing?

I have a 1967 80hp Evinrude and I am currently replacing the seals on my lower unit to stop a water intrusion problem. I have narrowed the cause to the o-ring that is under the brass bushing for the shift rod. Can anyone tell me how to remove that bushing without destroying it? It looks pretty well set in there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love this site.

You don't remove the bushing on the V-4 motors. Simply pick the old o-ring out and squeeze the new one flat and shove it in there. Some home-made from stiff-wire pick and poke tools help.

Thank you so much FR! That makes a heck of alot of sense. You just saved me a trip to the parts store and probably a bit of embarassment too. I might actually get out on the water this weekend.
Thanks again.
