How do I remove the last U-Joint (Alpha)?

I need to change the u-joints on my Mercruiser Alpha One.

I have the outer yoke off, and the center socket ring, leaving only the inner u-joint in place at the lower unit. The end caps of the j-joint next to the lower unit won't come off because the retaining nut driveshaft housing is in the way.

Can I just use a grinder to grind a slot big enough for the cap to slide out, or is there another way of getting this last u-joint out?

Thanks,

Mike

I remove the ujoint yoke from the drive and double bearing. Then install new ujoints, new seal and put back together.
I hate hammering on bearings.

grind out two teeth from the nut. one opposite the other. Just enough for the cap to slide by. It'll give you enough room to get the ujoint out and still leave plenty for the wrench if and when that input shaft needs attention.

Thanks, I'll grind a bit out.
